20 April 2008Australia 2020 Summit: a talkfest for Australia's dominant political classI have hardly given any attention to the Australia 2020 Summit. Why should I as a conservative? We know very well that such occasions are for Australia's dominant political class with all their political and philosophical assumptions. There will be the big "vision thing" which will provide the opportunity for the foremost members of the PC-class to propagandise yet again, and to work out more undemocratic ways of imposing their political doctrine on a majority of unwilling citizens. It is no surprise, indeed entirely expected, that the headline topic for the 1000 clever Australians was the republic. It seems from my brief reading that it is the usual childish cant about Australia standing on its won feet, having an Australian head of state etc etc. An unresolved question in my mind is whether these clever people really do think that Australia will never be independent and always a slave to a foreign royal family unless it breaks formally with the British monarchy - and mutilates the Australian constitution in the process. I am inclined to think most of these clever people know that the republic issue is essentially an issue about deep change to the Australian constitution and has nothing to do with the de facto independence that can be dated some time at least from the late nineteenth century, and that they think the only way they can sway the Australian public is to carry on with that juvenile stuff about independence. The issue of the republic is yet another way for Australia's dominant political class to consolidate and extend their political power. The historical constitutional connection between Australia and the British monarchy stands in their way. Republic a hot topic at Australia 2020 Summit
