A catalogue of male violence points to a culture grown out of corrupt moral visions

Three young men bash a Canadian tourist to death

Following directly on the news of the vicious unrestrained bashing of a nineteen-year-old in a suburban takeaway, news breaks of three young men bashing to death a tourist having a drink by himself.

For a man to beaten to death by kicking and punching, the violence would have to have been at least on the level viewed in the CCTV vision of the Hungry Jacks incident, but probably much higher. Imagine it. Three men on to one, fatally kicking and punching him. The ordinary person cannot imagine it - the violence nor the mentality of the violent young men.

It's useless to talk about drugs and alcohol as the cause, of the failure of the police to deal with the violence. These are not the problem, merely the symptom and the unmanageable circumstances. The problem is the corrupt social environment that produces these violent young men, young men who have no feeling whatever for the brutality they exercise, or for their victims.

Tackling the problem adequately means adopting a different moral vision for the education of young men, and dealing severely with cases of violence in the meantime.

Postscript: Shortly after I posted this comment, there was a report that two men accompanied by their solicitor arrived at the Prahran Police station. It will be interesting to see how the Hungry Jacks case develops, and how the court deals with the three men, one of whom is already in custody.
