THE DUTCH REPORT
I have added
little to these pages since 2009 because of lack of time, my attention
increasingly being on my book writing projects - the same reason I have
reduced general comments. The political
circumstances in Holland are now much the same as then, with the difference
that a conservative voice, though small, is growing. The view that
multiculturalism has failed - as recently claimed openly by German
Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron - is being
raised without the usual howling. Those who are making political profit from
the malignant fantasy of multiculturalism will increasingly
come under pressure and have to do better than accusing their critics of
racism and right-wing extremism. PVV's Geert Wilders attracts attention precisely because the dominant political
class is not listening. I will occasionally make comments on Holland when
the urge is strong enough and time permits. The political and social
insanity in Holland is, after all, entertaining if not instructive.
Not everything, of
course, is bad in Holland. My comments focus on the social and political
activity of the country. There is another side to Holland which I admire and
enjoy. Strangely, Holland (and this is a feature I have never understood)
has an almost schizophrenic attachment to Dutch traditional life. This is a
subject too complex to summarise here, but is a praiseworthy part of The
Netherlands.
