10 July 2008A media assassination is underway - led by The Australian Broadcasting CorporationWe have seen it all before: the same pattern, the same ideological and political groups, and the same sort of target. Neil Mitchell top-rating radio host of top-rating radio station 3AW part of the Fairfax Radio group scoffed loudly this morning at the idea of a conspiracy to destroy Cardinal Pell, insinuating not too discreetly that this was the contemptible defence of leading figures in the Catholic Church, meaning of course those detestable bishops. Here's a news flash for Mitchell: the bishops are outnumbered many thousands to one. Everyone I know has contempt for the venal, self-serving, self-aggrandizing, manipulating people who mostly make up Australia's media. Mitchell, like many of his media colleagues, has reporter's alcoholic brain, causing his synapses to violently misfire when his deepest prejudices are aroused. He'll rant in support of the assassination attempt until its all over. With the appearance last night on Lateline of yet more malleable evidence against Cardinal Pell, what we already knew was confirmed. We must wonder whether this Australian Broadcasting Corporation program has more firepower in its arsenal. They may already have enough for their purpose. There can be no doubt on the evidence that ABC's Lateline planned this operation, most likely in collusion with Broken Rites, or some other anti-Catholic group, to go into action on the eve of the Pope's visit. It's laughable, given the ABC's record in particular, to insist it is all just a coincidence. There are two layers to the assassination attempt. There's the upper layer, which comprises the people with concrete evidence that can be exploited against an undesirable public figure. In the present case of Cardinal Pell, it is Lateline that has the hard evidence. The lower layer comprises all those like-minded people who are in a position to offer effective support: people in the media, public service, the law, education and so on. They form a conspiracy of like-minds and common purpose. The first move is to manufacture a charge using the hard concrete evidence in hand, utterly disregarding counter evidence or different interpretations of the evidence. This is worked over continually drawing more and more like-minded people in until the original issue is lost in the mythology that has long been established about the person and his views. The entry of Mitchell's rant this morning is a perfect example of what I am talking about. This has been exactly the process with Cardinal Pell. The original issue of the factually incorrect letter and the Cardinal's explanation have been lost in the mythology that has been built up about clerical sexual abuse in the Catholic Church and Cardinal Pell's alleged role in covering it up. I have written about this many times in past comments. Facts are in fundamental contradiction to the prevailing mythology that has every priest a paedophile and every bishop in collusion against the victims, covering up wherever possible. In this mythology there is no talk about actual figures, comparison with other groups, or mention of the fact that the great majority of clerical sexual abuse cases concerns homosexual priests or brothers abusing pubescent males, priests and brothers who have ironically jettisoned Catholic teaching and taken on the moral and political philosophies of the class now attempting to assassinate Cardinal Pell. I listened appalled this morning to the misreporting on the Nine Network's Today program and Fairfax radio's news bulletin. The scriptwriters for those bulletins had no idea of the detail of the Anthony Jones case, or they were consciously part of the assassination attempt. This would have been the case right across the media. We are now at the point where the drama will run its course with those appalled and outraged by what's happening unable to do anything about it. We can't do anything about it because we are not part of the class that has effective power. These are circumstances that should cause serious reflection in those who feel the gross injustice suffered by Cardinal Pell. I am gratified by the number of people who have visited my website over the last few days. I am assuming that those who are returning are in sympathy with what I am writing. Although there is little we can do to halt the momentum of what's underway, we can show our strong support for Cardinal Pell, and get in contact with the ABC and other media instruments and complain bitterly about the bigotry and misuse of power. They will feel it if we can keep on them. It was comforting to hear that Neil Mitchell was assailed by many emails criticising him for his rant against Cardinal Pell and the arrogance demonstrated in calling for his resignation. Keep it up if you're reading this. Here is the link to the ABC's complaint form. Please use it: http://www.abc.net.au/contact/complain.htm comments: gerardwilson01@optusnet.com.au
