7 January 2010'The Golden Compass' - a rare media win for ChristiansJames Hirsen reports on the Newsmax website that the producers of 'The Golden Compass' have shelved plans to produce a sequel based on The Subtle Knife, the second book in His Dark Materials triology by successful children's author Phillip Pullman. This is a great and rare victory for Christians and must be attributed to the strong critical reaction, particularly by Catholics, for the decision by Newline Cinema to drop the sequel. Zenit Newsagency's report What every parent should know about the Golden Compass was no doubt a powerful exposition of the nastiness and lurid anti-Christian bigotry behind the first film. (See also my comments and references 1 2). Sam Elliott, one of the stars of 'The Golden Compass', blamed the 'Roman Catholic Church' according to Hirsen. I hope he's right. I hope that not only the interviewees in the Zenit report - well known Catholic writers Peter Vere and Sandra Miesel - but all of us who raised our voices contributed to Newline Cinema's decision. It shows that if Christians as a group raise their voice on issues like this they can be effective. Conservatives who by their nature and beliefs are slow to stand up for themselves have things to learn from the feverish organising ability of our political opponents/persecutors. The success of this action is all the more pleasing because it kicks sand in the face of one of the English-speaking world's most demented anti-Christian writers. Pullman is a man howling his torment from religion in the lunar twilight of his dark materials, a man beside himself with hallucinating hatred for Christians, especially Catholics. The plans for his latest book are enough indication. Read my comment. He and Richard Dawkins make a great couple in hate. Comment: gerard@gerardcharleswilson.com |
