4 August 2003High time to complain about the media's casual anti-Christian bigotryA number of people have have been in contact with me about the Footy Show incident outlined in the previous comment. I thank readers for their support and encourage you to complain directly to the station.Complaints to the Nine Network about a particular program must be addressed in writing to 'The Executive Producer' of the relevant program before any notice will be taken. This is in accordance with the requirements of the Australian Broadcasting Authority. The address is as stated below in the letter that I dispatched today to Channel 9.The Executive Producer Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to lodge a vigorous complaint about connected incidents on The Footy Show of 24 and 31 July. I have written an account of the incidents (with commentary) and posted it on my website (http://home.iprimus.com.au/gerardwilson/newman.htm). I attach a copy. I intend to send my complaint to The Australian Broadcasting Authority for what must be totally unacceptable to any decent fair-minded Australian. There are two major issues here. Let me deal first with the one of gratuitous slander and bigotry. The question for the public is whether the management of Channel Nine supports and approves of the slander and bigotry directed at a group of Australians in a program which is as much a family show as a sports show. Does management also support the crude ignorant response of one the show ‘stars’ when someone raises a polite objection? The second question is whether the Channel Nine management supports Sam Newman in his sometimes unmerciful ridicule of people who are so obviously less fortunate than he. His treatment some weeks ago of the obese Adelaide girl was cruel in the extreme. Someone has to tell this man that his jokes are no longer funny. Will the Nine Network tell him? Or will they let him go his way unrestrained? I would like an official response to these questions. I am not an avid football supporter. I watch the Footy Show because of the human element in what is an important aspect of the cultural life of Victoria (AFL football). I won’t bother if Newman insists on ruining it with his crude ignorant behaviour. On this point, Newman would be advised to correct his own deep-seated moral ignorance instead mocking football supporters for trivial spelling mistakes. Yours, Gerard Wilson |
