What does the ordinary Dutch person think of Islam?

Survey after survey in Australia reveals that the ordinary person is far more concerned about Islam than academics, media people and generally the whole Politically Correct Class. How does that compare with Holland? Are there the same concerns among ordinary Dutch people? The following was a representative reader response to the report on Imam Ahmed Salam in the Brabants Dagblad (see previous comment).

Yet another report [re. Imam Ahmed Salam] that makes it evident that Islam represents a big danger for our democracy. And no, not because they are good or bad people, but because their culture in essential points is incompatible with ours. And let us stop kidding ourselves that the problem is not Islam itself but a small group of radicals...

It's not about racism or xenophobia - however much our political representatives would have us believe - but about culture.

It is very simple: if we let Islam continue to grow in Holland, then slowly (first through democratic ways) the laws of democracy will make way for the laws of Allah (The Sharia).

If this is what we want - and consider that our long and hard fought for freedoms don't really mean much - then we have to go on the way we've been going. If this is not what we want, then everyone will realise that we have to stop as much as possible the flow of still more Islam into Holland. After all one cannot mop up with the tap running [a Dutch expression]. At the same time we must make it clear to our present Islamic fellow-citizens what we stand for, that they are more than welcome, but we expect that they are prepared to co-operate with regard to the key points [of our culture].

Clearly the writer's key idea is that one must consider Islam in terms of culture. This is a point I have been harping on for years. Islam is religious, cultural, social and political framework. Indeed, I think the religious content is subordinate to the cultural and political content. Most people in the West seem not to know that Islam spread through the sword. The whole of the Mediterranean was Christian until the Islamic armies conquered, subdued and by the sword forced the people to submit. Imams are unabashed about the establishment of a world-wide Caliphate and the penalties reserved for apostate Muslims. Imam Ahmed Salam is merely a resolute soldier in the cause.

(Note: The reader will have to take into consideration a fairly literal translation of quite a well expressed letter in Dutch.)
