Freedom of speech? Not when Islam is concerned
Any Catholic can testify to the unrelenting anti-Catholic bigotry that is
spread by the media year in year out. Australia's Philip Adams, funded
generously by media companies including the national broadcaster, is the
leader of a legion of bigots who will seize any opportunity to vent their
sick hatred of something they have little idea about. Any effort to limit
these attacks is howled down by an appeal to the right of free speech.
Observation of Holland will lead to similar conclusions. If anything, the
anti-Catholic bigotry in Holland is more strenuously protected.
Geert Wilders is a Dutch politician who has for months been preparing a
film critical of Islam. Nobody knows the content and nobody has seen the
work in progress other than Wilders and his close associates. That has not
stopped Muslims and Islamic countries from raging and threatening dire
consequences if the film is shown.
And how are the brave countries of the European Union reacting to the
threats? They are collapsing like a house of cards. Naturally the Dutch Left
is calling Wilders a racist (the Left have a special feeling for criminals
and deviants) while the majority of politicians are pleading with Wilders
not to show it. The Prime Minister of Holland, Jan Balkenende, has just
returned from a trip to Brussels where he begged EU countries to support
Holland if Wilders went ahead with showing the film.
Hypocrisy and sanctimony are the outstanding virtues of the PC-class. But
cowardice does not come far behind.
