The Crusades in Context

The link below is to the first of two articles by Fr Paul Stenhouse PhD on the Crusades, an episode in European history that has been distorted and misrepresented to such an extent that most people in the West have little idea of what actually happened and why. Few people, for example, would know that the countries surrounding the Mediterranean (including those on the African continent) were Catholic until the Islamic sword brought them under submission within a hundred years of the death of Muhammad in AD 632. The First Crusade was called in 1095. The violence of Islamic armies and the threat of the Islamic sword were the means through the centuries of  converting whole countries and peoples to the Islamic faith. The second article will follow shortly.
