14 March 2010The Catholic Church - getting the history rightIn the years following the Second Vatican Council there has been much improvement in relations between the main strands of Christianity. Although there has been a false ecumenism that has resulted in a regrettable and counter-productive syncretism, there has been equally a genuine effort to discover what the Christian Churches have in common and where they differ. This has borne fruit, not least in sweeping away some of the misapprehensions each had about the other, misapprehensions that go back to the time of the Reformation. Sadly, while most Protestant churches no longer accept the more lurid of the accusations levelled at the Catholic Church, there are still some fundamentalist groups that seem unable to live without clasping to their breasts beliefs that simply have no historical foundation. Indeed, anti-Catholicism appears to be the central requirement for membership. Below I offer a link to a book which offers answers to the claims of groups displaying so much antagonism towards the Church. I do this in the first place to correct historical error. We will get nowhere unless we all have an accurate understanding of what has happened in the past. Second, apart from the scandal of division, the Christian churches have to understand that they have two enemies, one within Western Civilisation and one without. Within Western Civilisation the enemy is atheistic materialism. Christians cannot afford to engage in enervating conflict based on false information. A LIGHT ON BIBLICAL FUNDAMENTALISM
