Defending Pope Benedict from the campaign of smear in the world's media

The New York Times' article aimed at implicating the Pope in the cover-up and protection of priests in child abuse cases has been taken up with the usual uncritical gusto in the Western world's media - to understate the case dramatically. The world's media frequently degenerates into a frenzy of reporting on itself, but the continual regurgitation of the deploringly bad journalism of the NYT piece has reached depths previously not thought possible. The cogent and detailed replies by Church officials and other commentators do not, as expected, get coverage. When it comes to reporting on the Catholic Church the first rule of media editors is clearly never to indulge in balanced reporting. That obviously would be politically counter-productive. The articles and commentaries below are some that are readily accessible to any hack reporter who still has a vestige of self-respect.
